Route
Kutch — what to know before you go
NH 27 from Ahmedabad runs northwest through Surendranagar to Gandhidham and then west to Bhuj. The road quality is generally good; the Kutch district section has some narrower stretches, especially towards Dholavira (an additional ~250 km from Bhuj on smaller roads).
Rann Utsav (October–February): The Gujarat Tourism-run festival at the Rann tent city is one of Gujarat's biggest draws. If you're visiting during this window, vehicle availability gets extremely tight. Book 2–4 weeks in advance — especially for Tempo Travellers and multi-vehicle convoys.
Dholavira: The UNESCO World Heritage Harappan site is ~250 km from Bhuj, adding a full day to any Kutch circuit. The road to Dholavira via Khadir Island passes through the Rann — a spectacular drive in the winter months. Most drivers know the route; confirm this when booking.
Artisan village circuit: Hodka, Nirona, Ludiya, and Ajrakhpur are within 60 km of Bhuj and are increasingly popular with design-conscious travellers. A comfortable Innova with a driver who knows these villages is the best way to cover them in a day.
